Join the Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue team as a Public Education Specialist! 

As a Public Education Specialist, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering impactful fire and life safety education that strengthens community resilience. This highly collaborative role combines program development, event coordination, public outreach, and creative content creation to support community risk reduction. You will take ownership of assigned programs and events from concept through execution—designing curriculum, coordinating logistics, managing budgets, and cultivating partnerships that expand education efforts across schools, businesses, and community groups.

In this position, you’ll be the driving force behind public-facing initiatives such as safety campaigns, community events, CPR and first aid classes, and digital communications. The Public Education Specialist provides professional and technical expertise to develop, maintain and enhance the District’s fire and life safety programs and events.  Work is characterized by the responsibility for the assigned program and/or event.  The position will work closely with the District’s communities including schools, businesses, community organizations and the general public, as well as coordinate education efforts between the District and other associated fire and life safety organizations throughout the state.  Position requires interaction with team members, the public, vendors, contractors and employees throughout various stages of the program or event.

The Public Education Specialist has responsibility of assigned program and event from initial assessment and design through to final evaluation. This position has considerable responsibility and oversight of assigned programming and budget allocation. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through meetings, regular status reports and results obtained.  Complex and/or sensitive program or event issues are resolved at this level.

Step 1 - Virtual Interview: Week of February 2, 2026
Step 2 - Panel Interview: Week of Feb 9th or 16th, 2026
Step 3 - Final Round Panel Interview: Week of February 23rd
Anticipated Start Date: March 16, 2026

  • Develop, coordinate and administer public education programs for the District(e.g. community safety events, fire & life safety, first aid & CPR classes, etc.)
  • Provide proactive community relations, through the writing, reviewing and editing of various public education communications (e.g. newsletter articles, emails, publications, etc.)
  • Build and foster assigned long-term working relationships with external organizations, businesses and/or agencies to further the District’s public education goals and interests (e.g. citizens, schools, community organizations, fire and life safety partnerships, etc.)
  • Research, write, and participate in the development and distribution of content for public education through various mediums (e.g. video projects, slide shows, internet, website, social media, etc.)
  • Coordinate assigned special events (e.g. open houses, festivals and events, etc.)
  • Develop and implement program curriculum to meet organizational objectives for Community Risk Reduction that is specific and age appropriate for the applicable audience(s) and supports the District’s vision/mission
  • Scheduleandcoordinatepersonnelforvariouseducationeventsandreview curriculum strategy to ensure delivery of event messaging is consistent and accurate
  • Identify, select and maintain an inventory of fire and life safety supplies/swag
  • Act as the point of contact for assigned special events for internal personnel and external vendors/participants
  • Identify sources, create and participate in collaborative partnerships to enhance fire and life safety education
Knowledge Of: 
Contemporary public education methods, techniques and learning styles to effectively deliver education material to all community members
  • Understanding fire operations and services
  • Techniques and practices of creating, organizing and coordinating curriculum, programs, activities and events
  • Business letter writing, email communications and report preparation including English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Effective presentation skills to engage various audiences
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment (e.g. computers, faxes, phone system, etc.) and, applicable software applications, and graphic design. 
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) First Aid & CPR Instructor or ability to obtain certification within 6 months
  • International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Fire and Life Safety Educator I certification or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in communication, education or related field
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in communications, education, or a related field
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of the position
Preferred Qualifications:  
Experience developing quality video, audio, and print media, social media and website content management, and relevant software expertise such as Canva, Adobe, Monday.com

Physical Abilities & Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors and requires driving between various work and community locations.  Incumbent must be available during non-traditional work hours for presence at assigned events and educational presentations
  • Indoor work takes place in a typical office setting and consists of computer work, teaching education classes/curriculum and other events with the public.  Work may require sitting and/or standing for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds and move items, climb, bend, twist, stoop, kneel and reach for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to speak in front of varying audience sizes (e.g. One-on-one, to large groups, etc.)
  • Requires manual dexterity, hearing and visual acuity
