Job Description

Deputy County Attorneys are government in-house counsel, concentrating on municipal law, general civil litigation, employment law, and other general legal work. The Office of the County Attorney is currently seeking applications for the position of Deputy County Attorney.

The Office of the County Attorney is composed of fifteen attorneys and five support staff, divided into a transactional team and a litigation team. The current vacancy is on the transactional team. The County Attorney is the chief legal adviser and legal representative of the County of Kaua‘i, and all its agencies, including the county council, and of all officers and employees, in matters relating to their official powers and duties. The Office of the County Attorney represents the County of Kaua‘i in all legal proceedings and performs all other services incident to the office as required by law.

Required:

  • Licensed in good standing to practice law in the State of Hawai‘i.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially with a legal team, including support personnel, having a significant workload but limited resources.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, high-pressure situations, and short deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s and Juris Doctorate degree.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Salary, benefits, and other positives:

  • Salary range is $90,000-$141,000 per year; starting salary is commensurate with experience.
  • Twenty one paid vacation days and twenty one paid sick days per year. Sick days roll over and never expire; vacation days may accrue up to 90 days.
  • 13 paid holidays in non-election years; 14 paid holidays in election years.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement benefits through the State of Hawai‘i Employees’ Retirement System (ERS).
